Catching cancer early

The Economist magazine recently wrote an article titled “Why Britain is so bad at diagnosing cancer” They point out that Britain has amongst the worst five-year-survival rates for three of the most common cancers: lung, colon and breast. We also have more cancer deaths per person than any other G7 country.

They go on to explain that much of the gap with other countries can be explained by delays in treatment and especially by late diagnosis. Quoting Naser Turabi of Cancer Research UK “Cancer is a progressive disease, so if you diagnose cancers early , in almost all cases you improve cancer outcomes.”

At the London General Practice we place the early diagnosis of cancer at the forefront of our clinical practice. It starts with your medical history, understanding you and your families medical history is key to forming a view of the risks you face.

We provide genetic testing for more than 57 inherited cancers. This one off test determines if you are at an increased risk of developing these cancers as a result of variants or mutations in your DNA. Understanding your genetic risks can help you and your doctor take steps to protect your health and build a proactive, and personalised plan focused on prevention. Depending on the condition, treatments could include medication, regular screening tests, or a change in lifestyle.

We are now offering the very latest cancer screening test. The TruCheck™ early cancer screening blood test is a blood test that is revolutionising the ability to detect cancer at its earliest stages, and we are proud to be one of the first providers in the country to offer it to the British public. It is the only test available publicly to check for Circulating Tumour Cells (CTCs), detecting even the tiniest existence of cancer from a small blood sample. Highly accurate, it not only identifies whether you have CTCs, but also where they originated. This means you know where in your body the primary tumour is located, speeding up diagnosis and treatment, and enabling doctors to focus treatment on the required areas. We offer this as a stand alone test and recommend that it is added to your Annual Health Screen. It does not replace more specific diagnostic tests for particular cancers but often will identify them at an earlier stage earlier and allow us to take faster more effective action.

Our experienced Doctors recommend all our patients have an annual health screen, using all the evidence available to us we will work with you to ensure we identify early signs of cancer, disease or other health issues. Located in the heart of Harley street and with our strong links with The London Oncology Centre, Harley Street Clinic and Princess Grace Hospital we are able to connect you with world experts in cancer diagnosis and care.
