Galleri® Multi-Cancer Early Detection Test
Screen for More Than 50 Types of Cancer with a Simple Blood Test
A More Proactive Approach to Your Health
Cancer is most treatable when it is found early. Yet many cancers do not cause symptoms until they have reached a more advanced stage, and many have no routine screening programme available.
The Galleri® Multi-Cancer Early Detection Test is an innovative blood test that can detect signals associated with more than 50 different types of cancer, often before symptoms appear.
Developed by GRAIL, Galleri uses advanced genomic sequencing and artificial intelligence to identify DNA fragments shed by cancer cells into the bloodstream.
At The London General Practice, we offer Galleri as part of our commitment to preventative healthcare, helping patients take a more proactive approach to detecting serious illness at the earliest possible stage.
Why Early Cancer Detection Matters
Every year, thousands of people are diagnosed with cancers that have no established screening programme and are often only discovered after symptoms develop.
Traditional screening programmes focus on a small number of cancers, including breast, bowel and cervical cancer. Galleri offers an additional layer of screening by looking for signals from over 50 cancers through a single blood sample.
Potential Benefits of Earlier Detection
- More treatment options
- Earlier intervention
- Improved outcomes for many cancers
- Greater peace of mind
- A proactive approach to long-term health
- Complements, rather than replaces, existing NHS screening programmes
What Is the Galleri Test?
Galleri is a Multi-Cancer Early Detection (MCED) blood test designed to identify cancer signals in the blood before symptoms may become apparent. The test looks for specific methylation patterns within circulating DNA that may indicate the presence of cancer.
If a cancer signal is detected, Galleri can also predict where in the body the cancer is most likely to have originated, helping guide further investigations.
Importantly, Galleri is intended to be used alongside routine screening and not as a replacement for mammograms, bowel cancer screening, cervical smear tests or other recommended screening programmes.
Who Should Consider the Galleri Test?
Galleri may be appropriate for:
- Adults Aged 50 and Over
Cancer risk increases significantly with age. Galleri is generally recommended for adults aged 50 years and above.
- Individuals with a Family History of Cancer
Patients with close family members affected by cancer may wish to consider more comprehensive screening options.
- Those Seeking Comprehensive Preventative Healthcare
Many patients choose Galleri as part of an annual health assessment or executive medical.
- Busy Professionals and Executives
For people who value a preventative approach to their health, Galleri offers a convenient addition to regular health screening.
Who Should Not Have the Test?
Galleri may not be suitable for:
- Individuals under 22 years of age
- Pregnant women
- Patients currently receiving active cancer treatment
- Patients who are experiencing potential cancer symptoms and require diagnostic assessment rather than screening
If you are unsure whether Galleri is suitable for you, our clinicians will be happy to discuss your circumstances during a consultation.
How the Process Works
- Step 1: Consultation
You will meet with one of our experienced clinicians to discuss your medical history, cancer risk factors and whether Galleri is appropriate for you.
- Step 2: Blood Test
A simple blood sample is taken at our clinic. The appointment typically takes only a few minutes.
- Step 3: Advanced Laboratory Analysis
The sample is analysed using next-generation genomic sequencing technology to identify signals associated with cancer. [digital.nhs.uk], [galleri.com]
- Step 4: Results Review
Your result will usually be either:
- Cancer Signal Not Detected
No cancer signal was identified within the limits of the test.
While reassuring, no screening test can detect all cancers and routine screening should continue.
- Cancer Signal Detected
A signal associated with cancer has been identified.
The report will indicate the most likely tissue or organ of origin and our clinical team will guide you through the appropriate next steps and investigations.

Frequently Asked Questions
What cancers can Galleri detect?
Galleri has demonstrated the ability to detect signals associated with more than 50 different cancer types, including cancers of the pancreas, liver, oesophagus, bowel, lung, ovary and head and neck. [galleri.com], [grail.com]
Can Galleri detect cancer before symptoms develop?
Yes. The purpose of Galleri is to identify cancer signals that may be present before symptoms become apparent.
Does Galleri diagnose cancer?
No.
Galleri is a screening test. A diagnosis can only be confirmed through appropriate follow-up investigations.
How accurate is the Galleri test?
Studies have shown that when a cancer signal is detected, the test predicts the cancer’s origin with approximately 93% accuracy. As with all screening tests, false positive and false negative results can occur.
What happens if my result shows a cancer signal?
Our clinical team will review the findings with you and arrange further investigations where appropriate. These may include scans, blood tests, endoscopic procedures or specialist referrals.
What happens if no cancer signal is detected?
This is a reassuring result, but it does not completely rule out the possibility of cancer. You should continue all recommended screening programmes and seek medical advice if you develop symptoms.
Should I continue NHS cancer screening?
Absolutely.
Galleri is designed to complement existing screening programmes, not replace them. Mammograms, cervical screening, bowel screening and other recommended tests remain extremely important.
How often should I have Galleri?
For patients choosing ongoing screening, annual testing is generally recommended, although this should be considered alongside your medical history and individual risk factors.
Is Galleri available on the NHS?
Galleri has been evaluated in one of the world’s largest screening trials involving more than 140,000 participants. It is currently available privately but is not yet part of routine NHS screening programmes.
