STOP-BANG Questionnaire

Could You Be at Risk of Obstructive Sleep Apnoea?
Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) is a common sleep disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep. Many people are unaware they have the condition, yet it can significantly affect sleep quality, daytime energy levels, concentration, mood, and long-term health.

Common symptoms include:

  • Loud snoring
  • Excessive daytime tiredness
  • Poor concentration or memory
  • Morning headaches
  • Unrefreshing sleep
  • Witnessed pauses in breathing during sleep

If left untreated, OSA may increase the risk of high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and other health complications.

What is the STOP-BANG Questionnaire?
The STOP-BANG Questionnaire is a simple, evidence-based screening tool used worldwide to identify individuals who may be at risk of obstructive sleep apnoea. It assesses eight key risk factors, including snoring, tiredness, observed breathing pauses during sleep, blood pressure, body mass index, age, neck circumference and biological sex.

The questionnaire takes less than two minutes to complete and can help determine whether further medical assessment may be beneficial.

How to Complete the Questionnaire

How to Complete the Questionnaire
Answer Yes or No to each of the eight questions. Give yourself one point for every “Yes” answer and calculate your total score out of eight.

Understanding Your Score

  • 0-2 points: Low risk of obstructive sleep apnoea.
  • 3-4 points: Intermediate risk of obstructive sleep apnoea.
  • 5-8 points: High risk of obstructive sleep apnoea.

A score of 3 or more suggests that you may be at increased risk of obstructive sleep apnoea and should consider a medical assessment.
