Epworth Sleepiness Scale
Are You Getting Enough Quality Sleep?
Feeling tired occasionally is a normal part of life. However, if you regularly struggle to stay awake during the day, find yourself dozing off while reading, watching television, travelling, or sitting quietly, it could be a sign of an underlying sleep disorder rather than simply a busy lifestyle. Excessive daytime sleepiness is commonly associated with conditions such as obstructive sleep apnoea, insomnia and other sleep-related disorders.
The Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) is one of the most widely used screening tools in sleep medicine. This simple questionnaire assesses your likelihood of falling asleep in a range of everyday situations and helps identify whether your level of daytime sleepiness may require further medical evaluation. The assessment takes just a few minutes to complete and can provide valuable insight into your sleep health.
Take the Test
For each of the situations below, select the number that best reflects your chance of dozing off or falling asleep:
- 0 = Would never doze
- 1 = Slight chance of dozing
- 2 = Moderate chance of dozing
- 3 = High chance of dozing
Once you have completed all eight questions, add your scores together to calculate your total.
Understanding Your Score
0-10: Normal range of daytime sleepiness
- 11-14: Mild excessive daytime sleepiness
- 15-17: Moderate excessive daytime sleepiness
- 18-24: Severe excessive daytime sleepiness
A score of 11 or higher may indicate excessive daytime sleepiness and should be discussed with a healthcare professional.
What to Do Next
If your score is 11 or above, or if tiredness and sleepiness are affecting your daily life, concentration, work performance or driving, we recommend booking an appointment with one of our doctors for a comprehensive assessment. Excessive daytime sleepiness can be a symptom of an underlying condition such as obstructive sleep apnoea, which is both common and treatable.
Our experienced medical team can assess your symptoms, discuss any potential contributing factors, and advise on appropriate investigations and treatment options.
