Am I dehydrated?
DEHYDRATION SYMTPOMS:
1. MUSCLE CRAMPS
“The body is full of water and electrolytes, and electrolytes are the salts that make body function and muscles work. If they’re not diluted by water and are too concentrated, because you’ve not drank enough water, that can cause flare ups of cramping and tingling in your body;” explains Dr Naveed Asif, GP at The London General Practice. “It means that the nerves that control the muscles aren’t working as efficiently, and often the muscles begin to seize up, because they just can’t function.”
2. HEADACHES
Headaches are very common symptom of dehydration. When our body water goes down, there can be some shrinkage of the brain tissue which causes tension and headaches.
3. FATIGUE
Tiredness, lethargy, or persistent fatigue can be key indicators that your body is lacking sufficient fluids.
4. INCREASED HEART RATE
The heart rate increases when we are dehydrated and have a relatively low amount of total body fluid to maintain the blood pressure and maintain the perfusion of blood supply to the key organs.
“The body also releases stress hormones, such as adrenaline. endorphins, and cortisol, to try and speed up the heart and speed up the process to increase delivery of vital blood and the associated salts and fluids to our vital muscles and organs.”
5. CHANGES IN MOOD
As our brain is sensitive to levels of hydration, people may find themselves getting a bit restless or irritable, if they are suffering from dehydration. Drinking water from when you get up in the morning on a regular basis can help reduce agitation and improve mood.
6. SKIN ELASTICITY
Dehydration can significantly affect the skin’s elasticity, which is its ability to stretch and return to its original shape. When the body lacks sufficient water, the skin may become dry, tight, and less resilient.
Why it is important not to ignore signs of dehydration
If dehydration progresses, it can lead to serious health complications. Staying properly hydrated supports the normal function of vital organs and overall wellbeing, so it’s essential to drink enough water consistently.
