The importance of hydration during a heatwave
Express – July 2025

With a summer heatwave across the UK Dr Angela Rai, GP at The London General Practice, contributes to an article outlining the importance of hydration. Dehydration can cause dizziness and fatigue among other symptoms so regular water intake is essential to stay hydrated and focused in the workplace.
In general, it is recommended that people drink six to eight glasses of fluid per day (approximately 1.5 to 2 litres daily) to stay hydrated. In hot weather the risk of dehydration is higher, and so it is advised to drink a cup of water every 20 minutes or so, especially if you are working in the heat.
Drinking water regularly over a period of time is often more effective than drinking lots of fluids in one go.
“It is important to space this out throughout the day and not to drink excessive amounts all at once. Start your day with a glass of water first thing in the morning to help rehydrate your body after sleep. If you are working in the heat, try to drink around one cup of water every 20 minutes.”
