Dr Katharina Lederle, an expert in sleep and circadian rhythms and central London GP, has highlighted some of the most common indicators that your sleep routine may be out of sync. Dr Katharina Lederle, notes that dentifying these patterns early can help prevent longer-term health issues and restore a better quality of rest.
Six of the main signs to watch out for if your sleep is becoming disrupted are:
- Regular waking: Frequently waking during the night may suggest your body clock is unsettled
- Restlessness: Activity such as tossing and turning in bed – may be a sign that you are struggling to fully relax.
- Busy Mind: A racing or overly active mind is another clear symptom, as it prevents the brain from winding down into restorative sleep.
- Low Mood: Sleep imbalance can manifest emotionally, showing up as persistent low mood.
- Lack of focus: Sleep can affect cognitive performance, making it harder to concentrate on tasks during the day.
- Overwhelming tiredness: Such as a triredness that lingers despite going to bed and waking at regular hours.
Dr Lederle explains that occasionally waking up tired and sluggish is normal, and this temporary state is known as sleep inertia. However, if grogginess and fatigue become a consistent problem and there is no clear explanation, it may be a warning flag for deeper sleep disturbances or other underlying condition
