Preparing for the Cold and Flu Season

Independent September 2025

Dr Naveed Asif, a General Practitioner at The London General Practice, was featured in The Independent, offering simple but effective advice for winter wellness. He highlights how drinking water and herbal teas, maintaining a stocked medicine cabinet with paracetamol or ibuprofen, and practicing solid hygiene – such as frequent and thorough hand-washing – can greatly reduce the risk of catching or spreading flu and colds. Dr Naveed stresses the importance of covering the mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, and using hand sanitiser in public spaces.

A major part of Dr Naveed’s advice is to stay up to date with vaccinations, especially the flu jab. The flu is a contagious respiratory illness with symptoms coming on rapidly, and complications can be serious in vulnerable groups. The flu vaccine is considered very safe and is recommended every year, as the flu virus mutates and vaccines are updated to match the expected strains.

Benefits of the flu vaccine include the best protection available against circulating flu viruses and the reduction of serious complications, such as hospitalisation, especially in young children, the elderly, pregnant women, and those with chronic conditions. Side effects are typically mild, such as soreness at the injection site, while serious reactions are extremely rare. The vaccine is strongly recommended for pregnant women and is safe to receive at any stage of pregnancy. It is most effective when given in the autumn, ahead of peak flu circulation. Together, Dr Naveed’s tips and The London General Practice’s vaccination advice form a clear roadmap for protecting health throughout the winter season.
