Understanding Allergies & the ALEX2 Allergy Test
An allergy is an overreaction of the immune system to substances that are typically harmless to most people. These substances, known as allergens, can trigger a range of symptoms in individuals who are sensitive to them.
Common allergens include:
- Certain foods (e.g. nuts, dairy, shellfish)
- Pollen from trees, grasses, and weeds
- Animal dander
- Insect stings
- Mould spores
- Latex
- Certain medications
When someone with an allergy is exposed to an allergen, their immune system may produce immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies. These antibodies trigger the release of chemicals like histamine, which cause the symptoms of an allergic reaction.
Common Allergy Symptoms
- Respiratory: Sneezing, nasal congestion, coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath
- Skin: Itching, hives, eczema, redness, swelling
- Digestive: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain
- Eyes: Red, itchy, watery eyes
- General: Fatigue, headache, irritability
In severe cases, exposure to an allergen can cause anaphylaxis – a life-threatening reaction that requires immediate medical attention. Symptoms may include difficulty breathing, a sudden drop in blood pressure, and loss of consciousness.
