Dr Angela Rai, Private GP at the London General Practice, discusses some of the warning signs of vitamin B12 deficiency. Older adults are often at more risk of B12 deficiency due to reduced acid secretions in the stomach. This gastric acid is essential in helping to absorb B12 and other vitamins.

Common signs of a vitamin B12 deficiency often include fatigue and lethargy. Additional symptoms can include mouth ulcers, a sore tongue and a loss of appetite. Vitamin B12 deficiency can also result in pins and needles, depression and even cognitive symptoms such as reduced concentration and memory recall.

If you are concerned about B12 deficiency then it is important to get the issue diagnosed and treated as soon as possible, as some of the problems caused by the condition can be irreversible if left untreated.
