Dr Angela Rai, Private Harley Street GP at The London General Practice, contributes to an article outlining some of the causes and quick cures for a headache.

“Most headaches are not associated with an underlying condition but maybe due to conditions such as poor posture, stress, dehydration, tension type headaches, migraines, or cluster headaches.”

How do you get rid of a headache?

Many headaches will go away on their own and are not necessarily a sign of a more serious concern. Below are some simple ways to get rid of a headache but if symptoms persist, or you are concerned, then an appointment with your GP may be advised.

To alleviate headache symptoms:

  • Stay well hydrated. If you need hydration drink two glasses of water (1\2 litre)
  • Apply an ice cold wet towel to the forehead
  • Be indoors and dim the lights or darken the room
  • Take Paracetamol (Panadol) or Ibuprofen (Nurofen) tablets, whichever suits you. (Always be sure to follow instructions and recommended dosage)
  • If you recognise the headache as migraine, take your prescribed medicine without delay
