Causes of Heartburn

Woman’s Own – May 2023

Dr Stuart Sanders

Dr Stuart Sanders, Private Harley Street GP, features in Woman’s Own magazine outlining the causes of heartburn and some advice on how to manage it’s symptoms.

Some of the advice offered if you suffer from heartburn include not going to bed immediately after a meal, eating slower and the use of antacids to help neutralise stomach acids.

If you are worried about heartburn or if symptoms are serious and persistent then it is important to check in with your GP. Additional medications, such as Proton pump inhibitors or Antispasmodics, are available on prescription.

Furthermore a health screen may be advised to ensure that it is nothing more serious. Cancer of the oesophagus, for example, can cause heartburn. In the case of new symptoms or additional symptoms such as difficulty swallowing and weight loss further testing may be required.
