Dr Elise Dallas, private Harley Street GP, features in the Daily Express offering some tips on how to tackle winter bugs.

There are many ways to help ward off a winter bug. Exercise, sleep and a healthy diet all boost overall health and help boost your immune system. In addition Dr Elise also notes the importance of vitamin supplements and fermented foods which can help to build up the body’s immunity that much more.

“As a doctor, maintaining a robust immune system is crucial, especially during the winter months when viruses are around. When I start to feel under the weather, I prioritise good quality sleep, as I’m a natural night owl but I recognise its role in immune health. Additionally, I incorporate vitamin D and zinc supplements into my daily routine, both known to bolster the immune system’s defences. While I source my vitamin C naturally from foods like water with lemon, I also regularly consume fermented foods (kefir and kombucha are my go-to). These foods contribute to a healthy gut, which acts as our first line of defence against pathogens. Furthermore, I continue the practice of cold-water swimming during the winter, which can give my immune system a beneficial boost. However, I’m mindful of the importance of balanced exposure, as repeated cold exposure without adequate recovery may potentially weaken immune function.”
